The Visionary
Everything began in 1984. Tomaž Čufer, a passionate biologist and innovator, started experimenting with organic matter in a small garage laboratory. His fascination was simple yet profound: how to replicate the fertility of ancient forest floors.
The name HUMKO was born from this duality: HUMus (organic soil matter) + KOmpost (compost).
"We didn't just want to sell dirt. We wanted to sell life." Tomaž's early patents in mineral-organic hybrids laid the foundation for what would become a revolution in Slovenian horticulture, eventually leading to high-profile projects like the green walls of the 2015 Milan Expo.
Our Evolution
The Lab Years
In the 80s and 90s, we focused on "Living Soil". We developed specialized substrates for professional growers, replacing sterile peat with biologically active compost blends that suppressed root diseases naturally.
Vertical Gardens
In 2005, we pioneered the "Humko Green Wall" system. We realized that for plants to survive vertically on concrete, they needed a perfect root environment. This drove us to engineer lightweight, high-retention substrates.
The PNC Era
Today, we shrink 40 years of knowledge into the Plant Nutri Complex (PNC) tablet. It is the culmination of our quest to make professional biological care accessible to every home gardener.
